Description:
The mission of the 1078 Gallery, a non-profit, volunteer-run organization, is to offer exciting exhibitions of contemporary and experimental artworks in visual, musical, literary, film, and performance mediums.
The Gallery was founded in 1981 at 1078 Humboldt Road in Chico, CA, as an artist's collective and alternative exhibition space. In 1986, the gallery became a non-profit organization, widened its mission, and moved to 738 W. 5th Street. It has been at its current location on 820 Broadway since summer 2006.
Today the 1078 Gallery features exhibitions, performances, and installations by artists of cultural and geographic diversity and promotes an appreciation of contemporary and experimental works from regional, state, national, and international locations. The Gallery has been awarded exemplary status by the California Arts Council and has received several National Endowment for the Arts organization grants. It is supported, in part, by funding from the City of Chico and its Art Commission and by its very vital membership. The 1078 is widely recognized by the Chico community as being a necessary element in maintaining cultural currency in all art forms for local residents.

Description:
Artists of River Town, while still a young organization, has developed into a group which has excellent recognition and credibility within this community. The membership is closing in on 80 members at this time and is one of the busiest groups in Oroville. While no one is required to participate in every activity, the choices are wide ranging and an artist can be busy or not--their choice.
Fun is an invaluable benefit of membership in Artists of River Town. Face to face, by newsletter, phone, group or one-to-one, email or activity versus simply sitting and staring at the surrounding beauty, painting together, plein aire or in the garage or studio, hands in the clay, squeezing tubes of pain onto a pallet or canvas, tree branches becoming another shape for self expression...It's all art, from the first color crayon to the last work, it's a fantastic way to live.

Description:
The Humanities Center in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts was founded in 1999. Its mission was to stimulate the life of the mind both among the faculty of the College and in the university and community at large, by creating and nurturing an interdisciplinary intellectual culture of ideas. Towards that end it chooses each year a theme to explore and invites prominent outside scholars to speak on topics related to this theme. The Center has been successful in bringing eight Presidential Scholars to campus, including philosophers Richard Rorty and Martha Nussbaum, historians Anthony Grafton, Edward J. Larson, and James McPherson, novelist Richard Powers, architect and writer Witold Rybczynski, and aesthetician Elaine Scarry. It has also brought to campus for talks and seminars dozens of other well known literary critics, writers, poets, historians, and philosophers, most recently, for example, literary critic/poet Sandra Gilbert and science writer Rebecca Skloot. In addition the Humanities Center sponsors a Friday Symposia series for faculty members to present their research, as well as a Thursday Tertulia series for more informal talks, debates, and panel discussions.

Description:
Avenue 9 Gallery opened with an exhibition "Openings" January 16, 2004. In April 2009, the gallery was transformed into a professional artist guild whose members are excited about exhibiting their art, learning from each other, sharing their knowledge, and solidifying their artistic presence in the community. Major decisions regarding direction, focus, membership, exhibition and event calendar are made collectively. All artists maintain a consistent presence in the gallery and have the opportunity periodically to be featured artist. As a professional organization, the gallery also does community outreach and mounts special exhibitions and group shows and sometimes engages in collaborative programs with other galleries and/or with advanced students at both Chico State University and Butte College.
