The 2009 Window Art Project includes 56 local artists partnering with downtown businesses to exhibit their art in storefront windows. This is the 15th October that Chico has participated in National Arts and Humanities Month which is a coast to coast collective celebration of arts and culture in the daily lives of Americans.
The event is also part of Chico's 5th annual Artoberfest and Palio kick-off festivities. Free Walking Tour Maps and the artist's contact information are available inside businesses displaying Window Art Project plaques. The Arts Commission started the Window Art Project in 1994 with the goal of promoting local artists and art as economic development by integrating art work, street level, into the vibrant downtown marketplace. Display spaces and merchandise are activated in unexpected ways and, at its leisure, the public is exposed to the city's artists. What started as a small effort with about 15 participants has grown into a fruitful collaboration that benefits the business, the artist, and the community.
